That’s why Daniella jumped at the chance to star in a brand-new anti-fur print public service announcement (PSA) for peta2—PETA’s youth division. The ad shows Daniella cuddling her rabbit pal Pez and carries the tagline “She’s not a collar, scarf, cuff, jacket, or pair of earmuffs … Please don’t wear any fur!” and steers viewers to peta2.com.”

“It takes a little more than a minute for the young woman to mark a wall with her hands and arms covered in animal blood. When she’s finished making the simple but unnerving marks in red, she simply walks away. The sleeve of her shirt bears a bloody stain. Her face is void of expression.
You can see the woman make these marks over and over in an old, silent Super-8 film from 1974 transferred to DVD. The red-marked film marks the entrance to the tough and compelling show, Ana Mendieta: Earth Body, Sculpture and Performance 1972-1985 at the Miami Art Museum. The show, curated by Olga Viso and organized by the Hirschhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington, D.C., is in Miami on its fourth and final stop in a tour that has included museums in New York and Iowa, where the Cuban-born Mendieta (1948-1985) was especially active during her brief but prolific and forward-minded and now celebrated career.”

“In 1963, as a medical student in Madrid, I visited for the first time the Alcázar of Toledo and lived an emotional moment when shown the telephone that Gen. Jose Moscardó used to say goodbye to his son: The son gave his life to the enemy, but did not give up the Spanish people’s fight for liberty, symbolized by that Alcázar.
I remember my pride recalling that we had a similar episode in Cuba. That’s when Carlos Manuel de Céspedes, the father of the Cuban nation, had his son, Oscar, taken prisoner and used by the Spaniards as a hostage to blackmail Céspedes. Céspedes responded: ”Oscar is not my only son, I am the father of all the Cubans who have died for Cuba.” And Oscar was executed on June 3, 1870.”
