“Taco and sombrero politics is the popular approach of the Democratic and Republican Parties toward the largest minority group in America. It is guaranteed that as presidential elections roll in every four years, candidates will eventually put on a sombrero and dance to mariachi music to incite the Hispanic vote. Such lack luster antics by high-ranking politicians do little, if anything, to heighten support within this growing community. Do they really want the Hispanic vote?
Hispanics living in America want the materialization of the American Dream. They aspire to have access to affordable education and a good economy that will enhance their lifestyles. The ever-present topics of racism, immigration and Latin American politics are also highly influential in the vote of Hispanics. According to the Kaiser Foundation’s 2002 National Survey of Latinos, one out of every three Hispanics have not completed high school or its equivalent. Whoever wishes to win the vote of Hispanics must address these issues with tangible solutions rather than mockeries. Educating the youth is the path to a better future.”

“Which leads to an interesting self-examination for Latinos.
Because there are so few Latinos in national politics, high offices, etc., would we as a community, when offered the chance to vote/support a Latino candidate/nominee, be so impartial as to vote/support the “other” guy if the Latino/a didn’t measure up? Or would we use our voting strength and vote them in anyway?”

“Although Latinos traditionally vote Democratic by significant margins, Cuban-Americans usually go the other way and vote overwhelmingly for the GOP. Since George W. Bush became president by carrying Florida with little more than 500 votes in 2000, the increasing non-Cuban Latino population of the state is being carefully watched by both major parties. The demographic changes are likely to have a serious impact on this year’s presidential election.
Cubans used to be the largest ethnic group among Florida’s Latinos, but now are only one third of the 2.6 mil. Hispanics in the Sunshine State. They have historically voted Republican because of the GOP policy of taking a strong stand against the much-hated Castro.”

“Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger’s popularity among Latinos has plummeted in the last several months, with only 17 percent approving of his performance as governor. Although the drop in popularity reflects the general trend, Latinos have very specific reasons for their movement away from Schwarzenegger.
As governor of a key state with an economy rivaling that of major industrialized nations, California’s relationship with Mexico is crucial. Yet during Schwarzenegger’s tenure as governor, the state’s links with our southern neighbor have taken a beating. Although he has stated a number of times how much he likes Mexico because he made a number of movies there, the fact is that Schwarzenegger’s relationship with Mexican leaders has been chilly.”

“It seems that every magazine or newspaper that has been published in the United States in the last year has focused attention on America’s growing Hispanic population and the economic market it represents.
The figures are quite impressive and now fairly well known. Over 41 million Hispanics constitute the nation’s largest minority group representing 14.1 percent of the population. Their combined purchasing power is growing at over eight percent a year and will reach US$923 billion by 2008, or twice the current GNP of Mexico. The median income of a Hispanic household in the United States in 2000 was US$33,500. There are now over 1.6 million businesses owned by Hispanics in the United States, et cetera, etc. The figures indicate a population that is growing in size and economic power at a much faster rate than the non-Hispanic population in the United States.”

The president’s nomination was a disappointment to some in El Paso who had hoped to see a Hispanic on the nation’s highest court.
“It is time for a lot more racial diversity on the Supreme Court,” said Annabell Perez, the president-elect of the El Paso Mexican American Bar Association.
For the second time in a five week period, President Bush decided against nominating a highly qualified Hispanic to fill the seat vacated by Associate Justice Sandra Day O’Connor. In doing so, the President again missed the historic opportunity to be the first President to make the decision to more meaningfully diversify the nation’s highest court by including a Hispanic among its nine members.
“The HNBA is by no means pleased that the President did not name a Hispanic American to fill the seat vacated by Associate Justice Sandra Day O’Connor,” stated Alan Varela, President of the HNBA. “A cornerstone of our nation is representative democracy and the equitable composition of our courts is an important key to helping our great nation remain on the right track. The HNBA will continue to serve as an unrelenting advocate for appointment of Hispanic jurists to the Supreme Court and throughout the courts of our land in order to protect the cornerstone of representative democracy and continually improve the system of justice. Despite the temporary setback, the HNBA looks forward to performing an open minded, professional and fair review of Ms. Miers’s record. We hope we will find that she demonstrates a commitment to equal opportunity and equal justice under law and that she is responsive to the needs and concerns of the estimated 42 million members of the Hispanic community.â€?
Over the past few months, I was asked by various media people for my opinion regarding who President Bush might pick to fill Supreme Court vacancies. In particular journalists wanted to know about the chances that this or that candidate would become the first Hispanic justice. (Apparently Benjamin Cardozo – one of the most famous judges in American history and a member of the Supreme Court in the 1930s – doesn’t count, despite being the descendant of Spaniards.)
I’m uncomfortable answering questions of this sort, partly because I have no more information on the subject than any other complete outsider to the selection process, but mostly because the politics of ethnicity gives me the creeps. This whole rigmarole of how appointing a Hispanic to an institution like the Supreme Court will supposedly signal that “we” have “arrived” as fully accepted members of American society has always struck me as basically fraudulent.
Hispanics’ status as Tarrant County’s fastest-growing ethnic group has made them a voting bloc that local Republicans are eager to court and Democrats are determined to keep.
Hispanics have voted overwhelmingly for Democrats in the past three presidential elections, but an increasing percentage of voters have been switching to the Republican Party.

But then I came across another more probable nominee: Judge Marilyn Milian, a Cuban-American who is on “The People’s Court” tv show and was appointed by the President’s brother, Gov. Jeb Bush, to the 11th Circuit Court in 1999 (which includes Dade County).
She is young and will occupy the bench for 30-40 years, keeping W’s legacy alive for a long time. Part of the Bush legacy is making sure that Jeb is viable as a Governor that can be re-elected and set on a historic dynasty in the White House. This can only happen with the Cuban-American constituency. Judge Milian will be the best choice to make this happen.

In past decades, many Mexicans who immigrated to the United States found themselves denounced as “pochos,” or traitors who Americanized too much, betraying their native culture and heritage. In recent years, however, the growing wealth of the Mexican Diaspora, particularly within the Southwest, has led Mexican politicians like Vicente Fox to praise Mexicans abroad as brave heroes.
Meanwhile the Mexican government has begun courting legal and illegal immigrants within the United States as never before. In 1988, Mexican law first allowed those who had become foreign citizens to reclaim their Mexican citizenship and property rights.

Believe it or not, there are many who refer to George Bush as the nation’s first Hispanic president. While not Latino by heritage, he has led one of the most racially/ethnically diverse administrations in the history of our country. With one look at his cabinet it’s evident to see. Seven out of 15 of the nation’s highest posts are held by minorities, including three Hispanics: Anna Escobedo Cabral as treasurer of the United States, Carlos Gutierrez as secretary of Commerce, and Alberto Gonzales as U.S. attorney general. The diversity of President Bush’s cabinet is evidence that he is acknowledging the contributions of Latinos, and other minorities, to the advantage of the United States.

“The sons and daughters of America’s Hispanic families have defended the freedoms of America, including giving their lives in service to our nation in every major conflict over the last three centuries,” Salazar said in a letter to Bush.

Good read and discussion going on here check it out.
“If the Dems continue to desert Ferrer, it will help Rove achieve another key strategic goal: winning Latinos to the GOP, a minority-outreach effort that he actually takes seriously. A victory for Ferrer, New York?s first Hispanic nominee — coming right after Antonio Villaraigosa?s election as the mayor of Los Angeles — would mean that Latinos had won city halls in major cities on both coasts. That would be deeply meaningful for Hispanics nationwide, reaffirming Democrats as the party truly interested in elevating them and making it tougher for them to bolt. National Dems seem blind to the potent symbolism that such a bicoastal victory would carry. But you can bet Rove isn?t blind to it. ”
That’s a creative defense of the dreary Ferrer: He’s no Villaraigosa, but together he and Villaraigosa average out to an inspiring bicoastal pair.
But I’m interested in another question, and I wonder if anyone reading this is enough of an expert on Latino politics to offer an informed answer — is this true? Is it the case that Mexican-Americans in Texas would be inspired by the election of Hispanic mayors in New York and LA? Or El Salvadorans in Northern Virginia, or Latinos in Chicago? Or old-line Hispanic families in New Mexico?

I can read a scoreboard. I understand that it is pretty much a forgone conclusion that the Senate, perhaps as early as this week, will approve the nomination of John Roberts as chief justice of the United States.
And this tells us as much about the weakness of the Senate as it does the strength of this nominee. The institution would be a lot stronger if senators stopped indulging their egos by going on about how they would have decided individual cases and paid more attention to things that might shed light on a nominee’s character.

IN Washington Heights, 71 percent of New Yorkers are Latino – almost triple the citywide percentage. It’s a place where a car with tinted windows, hopping on its hydraulics down St. Nicholas Avenue, is more likely to be blaring Juanes than 50 Cent.
