“Guillen may not like to be reminded of his September vow to retire from managing the Chicago White Sox. Then again, he may not like anything more, because he had promised to do so if they won the World Series.
Maybe that was a limb that extended all the way from Chicago to Caracas. But now that Guillen has qualified as the first Latino manager to lead a team into the Fall Classic, it might be time to ask whether he had anything crossed while uttering his exit line.”

Jay Rothman, ESPN’s producer for its Sunday Night NFL game coverage, took four years of Spanish while in school. But he says the phrase he will count on most this weekend is coffee negro.
“There’s a Starbucks right near Azteca Stadium, and I’ll be off to a great start each day if I can just get my cup of joe in the morning,” Rothman said.

When the Arizona Cardinals and the San Francisco 49ers play in Mexico City on Sunday, their Mexican hosts won’t have hometown pride on the line, but they will have money riding on the game, and a lot of it.
Sports betting is legal in Mexico, and every weekend thousands of gamblers line up at lottery windows or settle into cushy chairs at betting parlors to try their luck on American football. Tony Parrish, the 49ers defensive back, spent three days in Mexico during the summer promoting his team’s game Sunday against the Arizona Cardinals in Mexico City. He found he didn’t have to do much promoting.
The NFL estimates there are 20 million football fans in Mexico, making it the largest fan base outside the United States. Reporters from more than 150 news outlets attended Parrish’s news conferences. At youth camps, he met some of the 250,000 players involved with organized football.

The more than 40 current Latin MLB players who have slugged their way to millionaire status follow a grand tradition that began April 23, 1902, when a Colombian infielder named Luis Castro entered the Philadelphia Athletics lineup. Baseball might be as American as apple pie, but it has always been right up there with fútbol in the Americas as well. Smart scouts have always searched the sandlots of Cuba, Puerto Rico, Mexico, Panama, and the rest of Latin America, not only because they could sign players for a few pesos but also because they could sign great players for a few pesos.

The great Ted Williams, it turns out, was Mexican-American. Not 100 percent, but enough to have given pause to the Boston Red Sox of the 1940s. The mother of baseball’s greatest hitter, May Venzor, was born of Mexican parentage in the border town of El Paso, Texas.
Although Williams wouldn’t dare publicize his maternal bloodline during his playing days, Beantown these days no longer shuns the Latino player. This is so especially given that the Red Sox won last year’s World Series championship with the help of the talents of such players as Pedro Martinez, David Ortiz and Manny Ramirez.

As I wrote yesterday in this space, I’m more than a bit skeptical of MLB’s new project of having fans elect a “Latino Legends Team” to be announced during the World Series. Whatever its flaws, though, the election will help bring recognition to players like Luis Tiant and Minnie Minoso, which is inarguably a good thing.
In filling out my ballot, I haven’t simply picked out the best player at each position, which would essentially make it a current All-Star team, but have instead given weight to pioneering achievement and impact on the game. If this project is really supposed to honor the contributions of Hispanic players, it should go beyond the numbers in the Baseball Encyclopedia.

Last year, the New York Mets, a team whose most valuable asset was a Dominican shortstop too young to buy beer, didn’t have one Latino on their seven-man coaching staff. Everyone was mystified when Jose Reyes couldn’t get on the same page with the team in matters of personal training and pitch selection.
This spring, Boston’s David Ortiz spoke out about the fact that neither management nor the players’ union had provided players with Spanish-language materials on baseball’s new drugs policy. One might draw a connection between this lack of communication and the disproportionate number of Hispanic players who have tested positive for banned substances this year.
